These proceedings are based on a roundtable discussion held at the American Pharmacists Association, Washington, DC, on June 16, 2004.
These proceedings provide highlights of the roundtable discussion, focusing on the pharmacist’s role in implementing effective patient adherence programs to improve the quality of patient care and reduce health care costs. Overall, the roundtable participants’ remarks reflected a belief in the importance - and the benefits - of patients becoming increasingly involved in managing their own conditions. As such, the participants agreed to use the term adherence instead of compliance, because adherence connotes an interactive, collaborative relationship between pharmacist and patient, and respects the role patients have in their own treatment.
