Connected Health Director Receives Distinguished Academic Achievement Award from University of Vermont College of Medicine

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Joseph C. Kvedar, M.D., a 1983 graduate of the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine and leader in the field of connected health, received the UVM Medical Alumni Association’s Distinguished Academic Achievement Award at a reunion awards ceremony held on June 6. The award recognizes outstanding scientific or academic achievement.
Dr. Kvedar is a dermatologist and Founder and Director of the Center for Connected Health, a division of Partners Healthcare of Brigham & Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospitals. He also serves as an Associate Professor and Vice-Chair of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital dermatology residency program. Dr. Kvedar is a past President and member of the governing Board of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) and is also Chair of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Task Force on Telemedicine. In his role with the Center for Connected Health, he launched the first physician-to-physician online consultation service in an academic setting.
Dr. Kvedar is also leading important research into novel approaches for connected health in a variety of medical specialties, including post-operative care in the home, wound care, and remote monitoring of patients with chronic diseases, and a telemedicine connection to Cambodia that has allowed for consultation between U.S. and Cambodian physicians since 2001.
Additionally, Dr. Kvedar is co-editor of the book Home Telehealth, which was published in May 2006. He is a frequent lecturer and has authored over 60 publications on telemedicine and connected health. In 2003, Dr. Kvedar was honored by the New England Business and Technology Association for his extraordinary leadership in the field.
Kvedar, who lives in Lynnfield, Mass., is a native of Barre, Vt.
