Dr. Bell is a board certified internist with extensive experience in office practice, public health, academic medicine, physician support, and the commercial health insurance sector. She joined the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology in October 2005 as acting director of the Office of Health IT Adoption; she was appointed permanent director in January 2006. She was appointed acting Deputy National Coordinator in March 2006. Dr. Bell joined the Federal government in October 2004 after developing multiple successful payer contracting models that provided financial support for the adoption of clinical health information technologies (HIT) in the delivery system. Her work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services focused on supporting health information technology adoption through contracts with the Quality Improvement Organizations in every state. A previous position with Partners HealthCare in Boston provided the opportunity to work with a number of the physician group s affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Womens Hospital. She graduated from Pembroke College and Tufts University School of Medicine and trained at the Harvard teaching hospitals in Internal Medicine. She spent two years at Toronto General Hospital in Canada and finished an infectious disease fellowship at the University of Chicago before accepting an appointment at the University of Rochester and the Department of Public Health in Rochester, NY. While in Rochester, Dr. Bell was a principal investigator on the Medicare Demonstration Project that led to coverage of influenza vaccine for Medicare beneficiaries. Her current work includes development, implementation, and coordination of strategies to incentivize adoption of HIT and personal health management tools; oversight and evaluation of an HIT certification process; and identification and documentation of methods to assess HIT use as well as the costs and benefits of interoperable technologies.

Paolo Bonato (MS ’89; PhD ’95) serves as Director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston, MA. He is Assistant Professor in the Department of PM and R, Harvard Medical School, and an HST Affiliated Faculty Member. Dr. Bonato is IEEE Senior Member, IEEE EMBS AdCom elected member, and VP of ISEK. He is Editor-in-Chief of JNER and Associate Editor of IEEE TNSR and IEEE TITB. His research work is focused on wearable technology.

Cynthia Bouthot joined the British Consulate General as head of inward investment in October 2003 and was promoted to Consul, heading the Boston UK Trade and Investment team in July 2005. Prior to this, she was CEO and founder of a project management consultancy. Her previous experience includes Global Lead for Business Readiness for EMCs Oracle ERP implementation, and Director of Industry Consulting with Benchmarking Partners. In Addition, Cynthia has served as Vice President of a sport marketing firm, Executive Director of a community charity, and Director of Management Systems for the Massachusetts Port Authority. Cynthia also worked in London as the Director of the Massachusetts Office for Trade and Investment. Cynthia started her career working as a financial analyst and internal auditor for Honeywell and Groupe Bull. Cynthia has a Bachelors of Science degree in Business with a concentration in Finance from Boston College, a Masters degree in International Economics and Finance from Brandeis University, and has taught business and management at college level.

Troyen A. Brennan, MD, MPH, is Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Aetna Inc., one of the nation’s leading healthcare and related benefits organizations. In this role, Dr. Brennan oversees all clinical policy and medical management at Aetna. Prior to joining Aetna, Dr. Brennan served as President and CEO of Brigham and Women’s Physician’s Organization from 2000-2006. In his academic work, he served as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Law and Public Health at Harvard School of Public Health. He has published 240 peer-reviewed papers and four books. Dr. Brennan received his MD and MPH degrees from Yale Medical School, his JD degree from Yale Law School, and his MA degree from Oxford University. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

Doug Busch is vice president and chief technology officer of Intel Corporation’s Digital Health Group. In this role, Busch manages the Digital Health Strategy and Platform Development organization, which is responsible for providing strategic direction and global advocacy for Intel’s Healthcare IT, Personal Health Platforms, and healthcare architectures. Busch is also responsible for all platform planning, research and development, regulatory and quality assurance initiatives for the Digital Health Group. Busch was formerly the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Intel Corporation. In this role, he was responsible for leading Intel global Information Services and Technology Group (ISTG), which supports more than 90,000 employees in 50 countries. Busch joined Intel in 1987 and has held various technical and management positions in manufacturing, logistics, and information technology. He was the principal architect of Intel’s intranet and drove the introduction of advanced technology to improve manufacturing systems effectiveness. Prior to joining Intel, Busch managed research and development programs at Battelle Memorial Institute, including advanced automation programs for the aerospace and nuclear industries. Busch holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio State University.

John Cullinane was founder of Cullinet Software, Inc., the first successful software products company in the world, including the first to go public, and the first to be listed on the NYSE, as well as the first to reach a billion dollars in valuation. John is currently Chairman of the Board of LiveData, Inc. a software firm that is pioneering real time data integration and display for hospitals as a major contribution to patient safety by reducing the so-called “systems” errors that are the prime source of deaths in hospitals. Cullinane has also worked extensively with the Irish software industry and has promoted peace through jobs and economic development in Northern Ireland. During the past five years he has promoted Northern Ireland as a role model for peace in the Middle East, also, through jobs and economic development. John is a graduate of Northeastern University and has been the recipient of many honors including the first honorary degree ever awarded by the University of Ulster outside of the island of Ireland.

Joseph C. Kvedar, M.D., is the Founder and Director of the Center for Connected Health, applying communications technology and online resources to increase access and improve the delivery of quality medical services and patient care. Dr. Kvedar is also a board-certified dermatologist and Vice-Chair of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School. The Center for Connected Health is developing initiatives in telehealth, remote care and disease and lifestyle management programs. The term “connected health” reflects the range of opportunities for technology-enabled care programs and the potential for new strategies in healthcare delivery. In his role with the Center for Connected Health, Dr. Kvedar launched the first physician-to-physician online consultation service in an academic setting. He is also leading important research into novel approaches for connected health in a variety of medical specialties, including post-operative care in the home, wound care, and remote monitoring of patients with chronic diseases. Dr. Kvedar is a past President and member of the governing Board of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA). Dr. Kvedar is also Chair of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Task Force on Telemedicine. Dr. Kvedar is internationally recognized for his leadership and vision in the field of connected health and the application of communications technologies to improve healthcare to patients. Dr. Kvedar is co-editor of a new book, Home Telehealth, which was published in May 2006. He is a frequent lecturer and has authored over 60 publications on telemedicine and connected health. In 2003, Dr. Kvedar was honored by the New England Business and Technology Association for his extraordinary leadership in the field.

Gene R Sacco and his wife Lorraine established the Reid R Sacco Memorial Foundation in May 2005 to serve as a vehicle to instigate and support scientific research directed at finding better treatments—and someday a cure—for the deadly cancers that predominantly strike adolescents and young adults. The Foundation is also a patient advocacy platform from which to share lessons learned on how to navigate gaps and failures in the medical system like the ones the Sacco’s encountered while trying to save their son’s life. Of particular concern to Mr. Sacco are systemic barriers to effective and timely communication, which indirectly but ultimately reduce the quality of life of terminally or critically ill patients. Mr. Sacco has worked in the biopharmaceutical industry for more than 20 years. He is currently director of business practices development for Wyeth Biotech in Andover, MA where he integrates optimized business processes with new informatics technologies to streamline supply chain operations and automate performance metrics reporting. Mr. Sacco received his MBA from Northeastern University.

Dr. Lee Schwamm is Associate Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, Associate Program Director of the Clinical Research Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Director of Acute Stroke Services at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Director of the Partners TeleStroke Center. The Partners TeleStroke Center currently provides acute stroke consultation services to 14 rural and community hospitals in Massachusetts. He also acts as, where he is an Affiliate member of the Faculty. His clinical interests are in Cerebrovascular Diseases, Intensive Care Medicine, Brain Imaging and Applied Healthcare Technology. Dr. Schwamm graduated from the Harvard Medical School in 1991 and completed his neurologic training and NeuroCritical Care and Cerebrovascular fellowships at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Schwamm is a recognized leader in the field on the acute stroke treatment, stroke advocacy, and in the use of telemedicine and other technology strategies to improve the quality of stroke care. He is co-Director of the American Heart Association’s National “Get With the Guidelines-Stroke” program, and a member of the ASA advisory, stroke systems, stroke secondary prevention, and JCAHO stroke center committees. As a consultant to the Massachusetts Dept of Public Health, he has provided medical leadership for the statewide acute stroke center licensure system.

Focusing on policy matters, contracting, and corporate-sponsored research, Joe helps Partners build relationships with Fortune 500 companies and with payer and provider organizations, not only in New England but also in the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe and Asia. In keeping with these duties, he founded the Connected Health Symposium, now held annually at the Conference Center at Harvard Medical School. He has interned with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on coverage and policy issues relating to the use of communications technology in healthcare. Thanks to financial support from the Royal College of Medicine and Vodaphone, he has served as Senior Visiting Fellow at Kingston University, London. Joe earned his BS from Boston College, a Masters of Science in Taxation from Bentley College, and his JD from Boston University School of Law. He expects to receive his MPH, with a concentration in law, from the Harvard School of Public Health in May 2008. He is a member of the Massachusetts General Hospital Institutional Review Board and the American Telemedicine Association’s Policy Group and its Business and Finance special interest group. He serves as Vice President of the Continua Health Alliance. In July 2007, at the invitation of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Joe became a member of the American Health Information Community Chronic Care Workgroup.
