Thoughts on Symposium 2009 via Twitter

About the Author: Joseph Kvedar, MD is the Director of the Center for Connected Health.

Twitter has spawned so many interesting phenomena, I’m sure we could have a series of posts on how it's changed communications.  One aspect that I find fascinating is the requirement to get one’s message into the 140 character limit.  I think of it as the haiku of the 21st century!  We recently gathered for the 6th annual Partners Connected Health Symposium.  In my attempt to deliver an unbiased opinion, I’d say it was by far the best we’ve done so far.  The messages conveyed by the plenary speakers were uniformly relevant to the future of healthcare and the role connected health will play in it.  It is probably impossible to reduce two days of such rich interchange into a series of 140 character messages.  Still, this was the first of our symposia where Twitter played such a dominant role.  Several people who were unable to attend in person commented on how they felt a part of the proceedings by tuning their twitter search to #cch09 and following along.

We’ve gone through all of the tweets that were sent those two days using the #cch09 hashtag (there were about 800 of them and they are all catalogued here, courtesy of HealthBlawg) and culled out the ones that we feel represent the most salient thoughts from the band of conference tweeters.  So if you were among the Twitterati and your favorite tweet is not represented here, let me apologize up front for this.  We recognize the selection was arbitrary.  We tried to be even in our selection covering most of the conference content in the process.  I’d welcome your thoughts and insights on this.

For those of you that attended, do you think the tweet stream captures the essence of what you took away? For those of you who did not attend, do you feel like you get a sense of the conference from reading these tweets?  I will wait for a few days worth of comments and then weigh back in with my thoughts on this.

Here are just a few of the many tweets during the Symposium:

Enjoyed the symposium and would like to watch the last two sponsored videos. They don't seem to play, though. Are they still available?
